Parishioner Tony Maurelli describes a transformative event unrelated to SJB: construction of Baradères’ first cell phone tower. “It is somewhat jarring,” he says, “to see a man talking on his cell phone while leading two donkeys loaded with sacks of bananas.” We in the wealthy world cannot appreciate the transforming power of being able to instantly contact a far-away loved one—unless we have lived in a place with few vehicles, one horrible road and no functioning communications grid. Tony goes on to note many of the problems facing our sister parish but homes in on water. He describes a new CSJB project for testing public water sources to “stimulate a better awareness of the importance of clean drinking water to public health.” Could this lead to a community-wide effort to improve its water, transforming it away from its current role as a major cause of sickness and death?
