The solutions lie in low cost, household water purification systems such as the one we showed during the alternative gift fair last Christmas. We have been in contact with a non-governmental organization that produces, distributes, and provides technical assistance for household water purification systems in rural Haiti. This organization works through partnerships. They would work with us (the sponsor) together with a local water committee in Baradères organized under the direction of a stable institution in the community, like the local church. The project would involve training of community health educator technicians, distribution of purifiers and education of household members on correct use of the purifiers. We have discussed the project with Fr. Gattereau and other leaders of the Baradères community and they support the idea. I wish we could have started the project during our visit this year. When can we start? As with many worthy projects, it is a question of money. We are currently writing grants to solicit funds to support projects such as this one. But it was frustrating not to be able to start the water purification project during our trip in January.
