Why did I go back? Last year I really connected with the people of Baradères, people like Sr. Marta at the local clinic and Sr. Alouse at the primary school and M. Le Frein from the village. I wanted to make a difference there. I wanted to go back and see how we could begin some of the projects we had talked about doing. But what could we do? Everything seems so daunting at first: the remoteness of Baradères; the extreme poverty of the people; the challenge of beginning a project that the people themselves would be able to sustain after a period of time. Getting things done in Haiti can be so frustrating. Where can we get the English books that they need in school? Where can we get blackboards for the classrooms? How can we provide electricity for lights? How can we buy the anti-worm medicines that the kids should be getting? What about mosquito nets to protect pregnant women and children from malaria and dengue fever?
