Big Steps, Small Steps Some things were different this year when I went back to Baradères. The road is better but everything is relative. The road is still so bad in many parts that our driver has to put the truck in first gear, all-wheel drive for long sections at a time while we bounce and sway up and down the mountain. But the biggest change in Baradères since our visit last year is the presence of a cell phone tower about 200 yards from the church. I am astounded at how many people have cell phones now. It is somewhat jarring to see a man talking on his cell phone while leading two donkeys loaded with sacks of bananas down the dirt road. The benefits are potentially great – Baradères is no longer isolated from the outside world. Even Internet connections will be easier to establish. The downside is that some people are spending money on phone cards when they should be spending it on food or medicine.
