clinic at Tete d'Eau

Our clinic in the crude, one-room, building (church, school, and meeting house) in the village of Tete D'Eau overlooked the deep ravine of the Baradères River.

Rodney brought me a middle aged woman who gazed at the floor. She complained of fatigue. She lacked food, like everyone, but atypically she seldom was hungry. She awoke in the middle of the night, even before the roosters crowed. Rodney was momentarily perplexed when I had him explain that we were going to give this patient an "energy pill." He grinned and nodded when I wrote "Prozak" on the note to the colleagues in our little pharmacy. I explained the signs of depression to Rodney, and he easily and correctly noted them in a subsequent patient.

Our small supply of anti-depressant medications was just sufficient for the patients we evaluated. One woman, whose son had died recently, probably needs only the 30-day supply that we gave her. Periodic refills, ideally with counseling, would be required for the other five, including the woman in Tete D'Eau.
