Visual images abound, starting with the hospital, a modest but clean enclosed oasis of three single-story concrete buildings around a courtyard where surgeons rush about in scrub suits.
Nurses in traditional uniforms and caps administer oral and occasional intravenous medications on the 10-bed wards; patients wait for relatives to bring the only food available; lab technicians use 1970s-era equipment to quantify blood components and identify parasites; and a gardener closely crops the grass with a machete.
Behind the hospital, near a couple of enormous almond and mango trees, a crowd including a pushy amputee gathers for free food, distributed to those that arrived early enough to get a number.
