visit Home construction under way a couple of blocks south of the town square in Baradères. Hurricane Georges damaged many homes in the town in 1998. Most are still not rebuilt. The concrete-block house in top photo has rebuilt walls, but the ceiling cement has not yet been poured. Bottom photo shows men making cement onsite from sand and gravel. We think of cement as a relatively inexpensive construction material. But its transport is difficult because of Baradères' isolation and poor road. So these "cheap" goods are prohibitively expensive for many people. |
