Cynthia Norris became SJB's new director of social concerns on September. She was recruited through a national search effort by the parish. A native of Baltimore, Cynthia earned a B.A. in Religious Studies at the College of Notre Dame in Maryland and a master's in Theology at St. Mary's University and Seminary. Cynthia has traveled extensively through the country as a member of the U.S. bishops' Office for Black Catholic's Evangelization Team. She also served in church ministry as a trainer, teacher, administrator, columnist, author, editor and guest lecturer. She was founding director of the Archdiocese of Chicago's Office for Black Catholic Ministries. She was the only woman selected to represent the Archdiocese of Chicago in Leadership Greater Chicago, a program for individuals who have shown leadership potential to deepen their understanding of greater Chicago, expose Fellows to business, government, church and civic leaders, and enhance the future quality of Chicago. After diocesan work, Cynthia worked 14 years on child welfare issues in administrative, supervisory and consulting capacities. Her desire to return to the East Coast to be closer to her family coupled with her desire to follow God's plans for her led her to SJB where she found the best of both worlds Social Service and Catholic Social Teachings in one position. Cynthia reports she is "owned" by her two rescued Siberian Samoyeds Alexis, 5, and Koko, 12, who trained her well to spoil them daily. |
