Fr.
Brunache's Visit
Father Pierre-Michel Brunache,
pastor of St. Pierre's, visited St. John's on September 21-28, 2004. He brought great
news about the academic achievements of the students in St. Pierre's
Collège St. Jean Baptiste in Baradères. All the school's 9th
graders passed the national exams for the third year in a row. Three placed in
the top 10% nationally.
While here, Fr. Brunache met with
the sister parish committee and the parish team traveling to Haiti in January
2005. He and the team agreed that the main activities of the trip will
be
- To conduct medical clinics for
parish schoolchildren and families in Baradères.
- To finalize a planned agreement
with the region's only real hospital to provide surgery for some patients
referred by the sisters who staff and operate the small public clinic in
Baradères, and
- To train high school students in
how to identify and address routine medical problems that commonly go
undiagnosed and untreated in Baradères.
During Fr. Brunache's visit, he
also
- Met with SJB elementary school
students who asked him many questions about Baradères. (He was happy to
report to them that while Baradères did get much from September's
hurricanes, the area was spared the extensive devastation wreaked upon the
northern part of the country.
- Visited with the youth in SJB's
FOCUS group.
- Spoke at all the weekend Masses.
His homily was a stirring message of gratitude and encouragement and a reminder
that what we have to offer is more than silver and goldit is the love of
Christ found inside each of us, which leads us to share what we have with those
who are less fortunate.
- Celebrated, on Sunday, September
26, the 11th anniversary of his ordination.
Fr. Brunache expressed his
heartfelt thanks for the warm hospitality and continued generosity of SJB
parishioners and school children. He packed a very large suitcase with as much
of the donated school supplies as he could carry. The rest of the supplies will
be shipped.
